Industrial development plays a crucial role in the economic growth of a state. To ensure balanced and planned industrialization, the Government of Maharashtra has developed a structured system to classify industrial regions based on their development level. This classification is implemented and managed by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which is responsible for developing industrial infrastructure and promoting investment across the state. The article highlights the Industrial Area in Maharashtra and their zonal division.
Industrial Area Classification
Industrial areas in Maharashtra are categorized into A, B, C, D, and D+ categories. These categories reflect the level of industrial development, infrastructure availability, investment potential, and economic activity in different regions.
The purpose of this classification is to identify developed and underdeveloped regions and implement policies that encourage industries to expand into less developed areas. This helps in achieving balanced regional development and reducing economic disparities across the state.
- Category A – Highly Developed Areas: These regions have strong industrial infrastructure, excellent connectivity, and a high concentration of industries. They typically include major urban and industrial hubs where industrial growth has already reached a mature stage.
- Category B – Moderately Developed Areas: These areas have good industrial presence and infrastructure but still have room for further growth and expansion.
- Category C – Developing Industrial Areas: These areas are emerging industrial regions with growing infrastructure and increasing investment potential.
- Category D – Less Developed Areas: These regions have relatively low levels of industrial activity. To stimulate industrial growth, the government offers various incentives and support schemes to attract investors.
- Category D+ – Least Developed Areas: This category includes the most underdeveloped regions of the state where industrial activity is minimal. To promote development, industries setting up operations in these areas receive maximum incentives and subsidies under state policies.

Purpose of the Classification
The classification system serves several important objectives:
- Promoting balanced regional development across Maharashtra
- Encouraging industries to invest in backward regions
- Reducing regional economic disparities
- Optimizing infrastructure planning and industrial growth
- Providing targeted incentives and subsidies
By offering higher incentives in less developed regions, the government aims to distribute industrial growth more evenly across the state instead of concentrating it only in major metropolitan areas. To know the incentives in Industries in Maharashtra, Click here
In short, The classification of industrial areas in Maharashtra is a strategic policy tool that helps guide industrial investment and regional development. Through the efforts of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, the state continues to create industrial infrastructure and encourage businesses to explore opportunities beyond traditional industrial hubs.
