Thane, third most industrialized district in the State having 1548 large and medium scale and 18,480 small scale industries. The main products of the industries are Drugs, Textiles, Adhesives, Plastics, Rubber, Steel, Pharmaceuticals, Engineering, Fertilizers, Electronics, Chemicals and Iron & Steel. Manufacture of machinery, machine tools and parts except electrical machinery together with the iron and steel industry and metal products are the most important and the biggest group of industries in the district and includes manufacture of Prime movers, Boilers, Refrigerators, Machine Tools, Computing and Accounting machinery, Industrial machinery for food and textile industries, machinery for chemicals, paper and cement industries. Manufacture of basic industrial chemicals including fertilizers, vegetable and animal oils and fats, paints, varnishes and lacquers and other miscellaneous chemical products is another important industry in the district. The Tarapur Atomic Power Station which has ushered an era of utilisation of nuclear energy for electricity generation is also situated in the district.

The Tarapur Industrial Area is one of the best industrial area situated near Mumbai, Thane and adjacent to Gujarat state on Mumbai – Ahmedabad Express Highway is a well-developed Chemical  zone , which has a Central Effluent Treatment Plant that controls solid and liquid effluents, houses both MIDC & Tarapur Industrial estate, products include bulk drug manufacturing units, specialty chemical manufacturing units, steel plants and a few textile plants. The Tarapur nuclear power station houses two boiling water reactors. This PHWR (pressurised heavy water reactors) based power station is not only the largest nuclear power reactor in the country but also the largest power unit in India. The first “Common Effluent Treatment Plant” (CETP) in Maharashtra came up at Tarapur. The total developed area of Tarapur MIDC is 1035 hectors. The area available for industrial Plots is 852.74 hectors, the area under amenity space is 42.64 hectors.

Tarapur is one of the planned Chemical Hub where 90% of the industries have ETP membership & Tarapur having CETP of 25 MLD capacity in working condition, but the new industrial units with zero discharge are only allowed to be set up the industries in Tarapur. However, subsequently the units can apply and take the membership of CETP and may discharge the effluent in CETP once permission is granted. MIDC grants the lease of land for 95 yrs. Water:There is no water scarcity as the requirement of the industries is taken care by MIDC. River Surya flowing within 12 KM from industrial area is the main water source.

Roads:Good wide asphalted roads are available in the MIDC which can cater for Trucks and containers movements.

Fire:MIDC has provided Fire Stations in the industrial area.

Power:There is no power scarcity in Tarapur .Adequate power is available to the Industrial Area via a separate sub-station set up in the Industrial Area.

Common Effluent Disposal Facility:

 Liquid Waste: 25 MLD capacity CETP is under operation and at average COD of 45.6 Tones per day is being received, out of which 37.0 tons/day being treated is resulted in 8.8 tons of COD per day is discharged to Arabian Sea.

Solid Waste: All industries have become members of Common Hazardous Waste Treatment Storage Disposal facility (CHWTSDF) located in Taloja. Hazardous wastes generated from industries are being transported for disposing to TSDF an authorized facility to handle hazardous waste.
